E's Scissor Sheaths Set

In 1876 (Meiji 9), the Meiji government enacted the Sword Abolition Edict, prohibiting samurai from carrying swords. This policy caused many traditional swordsmiths to lose their livelihoods overnight. Meanwhile, the Western scissors imported from overseas at the time were bulky and incredibly heavy, sparking a demand for scissors tailored specifically to the Japanese hand.

Founded in 1783, the historic bladed-tool shop Ubukeya (うぶけや) commissioned a samurai swordsmith, Yayoshi (弥吉, real name Yoshida Yajuro, 1859-1900), to develop a solution. He successfully forged tailoring scissors that perfectly met local needs. Yayoshi eventually became the founding father of the Tobasamikai (東鋏会), and the widely renowned modern brand Shozaburo (庄三郎) is a direct descendant of this association’s lineage.

Compared to modern scissors, which are predominantly produced using welding techniques, we are deeply captivated by the traditional craftsmanship known as “総火造り” — a process where artisans hand-hammer and seamlessly forge the tool into a single piece.

We are incredibly honored to have commissioned the centuries-old Ubukeya (うぶけや) to exclusively forge custom tailoring scissors for Professor.E in three sizes: 24cm, 26cm, and 28cm. Seamlessly forged from SLD steel using the “総火造り” method, these scissors transcend mere practical utility for us. Every time the blade glides cleanly through fabric, we profoundly feel the continuation of a historical craft. These scissors will be preserved for our studio’s internal use and will not be available for public sale.

However, we have specially designed and crafted tailored horsehide scissor sheaths for them, which are available for purchase.
